Krzysztof Skórczewski Born in Kraków in 1947, entered Kraków Academy of Fine Arts in 1965, where he obtained his diploma at the Department of Print in 1971. Since that time, his works have been shown in at least fifty idividual and over two hundred group exhibitions. Initiallyinvolved in linotype and applied prints, Skórczewski became interested in the copperplate while studying at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm in 1976. From that moment, for 30 years he built his vast collection of over 170 copper etchings grouped into cycles. In his works, the artist returns to the subjects that fascinate him, namely, architecture, cityscape, the flora and fauna to build a succession of visions brimming with imagination and mystery. In Kraków, Krzysztof Skórczewski and his wife run a printmaking studio together with a printing press: here all prints from his copper plates are made. In mid-1990s, the artist took to other painting techniques, and continues to make series of pastels and watercolours. Among the prizes the artist received, there is the First Prize at the Festival Internationale de Gravure (International Print Art Festival) in Menton (France, 1989), the Second Prize at the International Print Biennial (Kraków, 1972) and the Albertina Society Award (Vienna, 1972). Skórczewski's works are found in tens of art collections of great renown on four continents: from those in his home city of Kraków and Poland (Museum of Copper in Legnica is in possession of a complete collection of his prints), via the Museum of Art and History in Freiburg, Print Room in Geneva, Kunsthalle in Bremen, to New York's Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Besides these, Krzysztof is involved in teaching and civic work. For a number of years, he was a professor of European Academy of Arts in Warsaw and cooperated with the State University of Utah. Today, a professor of Rzeszów University, he is thehead of Department of Print in the University's Institute of Fine Arts. Member of jury in printmaking competitions, he is famous for his involvement in Polish charity actions. |
